Regarding the August SAD ballot proposal in Bloomfield Township

The following information about the August Special Assessment District (SAD) proposal is taken directly from the Bloomfield Township website:

On August 6, 2019 Bloomfield Township residents will be asked to vote on a proposed 2.3-mill tax intended to fund a special assessment district (SAD) dedicated to funding Police and Fire. If the SAD is approved the Township’s general millage of 1.25 will be allowed to expire, resulting in a net 1.05-mill increase. The Township is facing a major budget shortfall over funding of the Other Post Employment Benefits (OPEB), specifically health care costs for retirees, and the Defined Benefit Pension Plan. This page is designed to keep everyone up-to-date on all discussion, documents and developments.

Here's the actual wording of the proposal which will appear on the August ballot:

SPECIAL ASSESSMENT FOR POLICE/FIRE DEPARTMENTS

Should the Charter Township of Bloomfield raise money to equip, maintain, and operate the Township Police/Fire Departments by annual special assessment levies of up to 2.30 mills ($2.30 per $1,000.00 of taxable value) on all real property in the Township that is not exempt from property taxes, for a period of 15 years, with the levies to be from 2019 to 2033 to provide funding for the 2019/2020 to the 2033/2034 fiscal years. If approved and fully levied in December 2019, the revenue from this special assessment collected in the first year would be $9,041,317.00. In the event this ballot proposal is approved by the voters, the existing voted general millage due to expire in 2019 will not be renewed by the Township.

The Birmingham-Bloomfield Democratic Club has taken no position one way or the other on the SAD proposal.

March Meeting: Craig Mauger of the MCFN

Please join us for our next meeting on Monday, March 18th from 6:30 - 8:30pm at the Baldwin Public Library, 300 W Merrill St. in Birmingham.

We'll be hosting special guest Craig Mauger as he shares with us "The Role Of Money In Michigan's 2018 Election."

Craig Mauger is the Executive Director of the Michigan Campaign Finance Network. Prior to his work with MFCN, he was a political reporter for more than a decade. He is an expert in money in state politics, including tracking the changing role of politically focused nonprofits and the connection between donations and legislative outcomes. Craig is a graduate of Ohio University's E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. He, his wife and two sons live in Holt, Michigan.

In addition, Oakland County Precinct Delegate leaders John and Susan Erich will be recognizing the Precinct Delegates from the BB Dems area.

We'll also be voting on final changes and approval of the new BB Dems by-laws.

February Meeting: Healthcare Policy w/Charles Gaba

Please join the BB Dems on Monday, February 18th from 6:30 - 8:30pm at the Bloomfield Township Public Library, 1099 Lone Pine Rd. in Bloomfield Hills for our next meeting.

In addition to being the BB Dems Chair, Charles Gaba is also a nationally-recognized healthcare policy analyst specializing in the Affordable Care Act. With the 2020 election already starting to heat up, the ACA still under attack and Universal Coverage on the minds of every Democrat, Gaba will have a presentation on the latest developments and the most likely options are for U.S. healthcare policy going forward.

In addition, we’ll be discussing and voting on modifications to the tentative by-laws which were approved at the January meeting. Again, only BB Dems members in good standing present at the meeting will be able to vote on changes.

The Dean.

John Dingell's shadow loomed large over the Detroit area, the state of Michigan and the entire nation for 60 years.

He played a major role in the passage of the Clean Air Act, the Civil Rights Act, the Endangered Species Act, the creation of the Children's Health Insurance Program and of course the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act, to name but a few.

The BB Dems express our deepest sympathies to his loving wife Rep. Debbie Dingell and family, as well as to his many friends and colleagues on their (and all of our) loss.
